On Friday 24 January, with the support of the Game and Fauna Service, the SBA Environment Department&nbsp;and the Department of Forests,&nbsp;watchers were stationed at 9 key look-out points&nbsp;and camera-traps were set up at one of the vulture supplementary feeding stations, to complete the first Griffon Vulture census of the decade and the first such count since the launch of the&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/birdlifecyprus.org\/news-details\/in-the-press\/life-with-vultures-project-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" style=\"font-size: 16px\">LIFE with Vultures<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">&nbsp;project.&nbsp;<\/span><br><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;action-packed&nbsp;day started off bright and early with high winds and powerful gusts \u2013 perfect flying conditions for the vultures.&nbsp;First thing in the morning,&nbsp;thirteen vultures were seen being active&nbsp;and stretching their wings&nbsp;around&nbsp;Episkopi&nbsp;Cliffs, before gradually breaking up into smaller groups and making their way inland.<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" class=\"wp-image-1076\" style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\" src=\"https:\/\/lifewithvultures.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/image.png\" alt=\"Shape\"><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b7b9af elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"3b7b9af\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/lifewithvultures.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Nepheli-vulture-census-2020-by-Eleni-Karatzia-VCF-768x510.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-1560\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lifewithvultures.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Nepheli-vulture-census-2020-by-Eleni-Karatzia-VCF-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lifewithvultures.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Nepheli-vulture-census-2020-by-Eleni-Karatzia-VCF-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lifewithvultures.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Nepheli-vulture-census-2020-by-Eleni-Karatzia-VCF-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lifewithvultures.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/02\/Nepheli-vulture-census-2020-by-Eleni-Karatzia-VCF.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Nepheli was seen roaming the Cypriot skies at the latest Griffon Vulture census \u00a9 Eleni Karatzia \/ VCF<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f430f14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f430f14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\">One of the highlights of the survey was when a\u00a0wing-tagged female (brought\u00a0from Crete and released in Cyprus\u00a0in [add year if known]\u00a0to reinforce the Cyprus Griffon Vulture population\u00a0as part of\u00a0<a style=\"font-size: 16px\" href=\"https:\/\/birdlifecyprus.org\/project-gypas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project GYPAS<\/a>)\u00a0was seen copulating\u00a0with an untagged (Cypriot-born) male\u00a0at a\u00a0usual nesting site on\u00a0Episkopi\u00a0cliffs. At the same time a second couple of tagged vultures were tending their newly-built nest and later\u00a0on,\u00a0the second pair was also observed copulating. Interestingly, one of these birds was observed visiting the nest of the Cypro-Cretan pair while it was unattended and stealing nesting material. Nest-building is clearly serious business, worth the risk of falling out with your neighbours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\">Further inland, a group of\u00a09 vultures including\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BirdLifeCyprus\/posts\/2663138603732830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ikaros<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\">, a young vulture recently fitted with a GPS transmitter as part of the LIFE with Vultures project, were seen feeding on a carcass of a goat, demonstrating the value of this species as nature\u2019s clean-up crew.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\">In the early afternoon, the vultures began returning to their roosting cliffs. At this point,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400;background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BirdLifeCyprus\/posts\/2663138603732830\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nepheli<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\">, a young vulture rescued last year and fitted with a GPS transmitter, who spent\u00a0the day\u00a0wandering\u00a0around the usual vulture haunts, returned to overnight at\u00a0Episkopi\u00a0Cliffs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-style: normal;font-weight: 400\">Overall, the estimated size of the Cyprus Griffon population remains stable at around 20 individuals, with three territorial pairs identified.
